The "Güell"

Although included in Vax’s first collection the Güell it’s very different from its sisters as it was born as an individual concept an evolved following its own pace apart from the other bags of the family.

Aunque la Güell pertenece a la primera colección para Vax Barcelona se gestó de un modo un tanto distinto a sus hermanas. La Güell nació como un concepto individual y evolucionó en paralelo a sus hermanas.

The Güell was born as a 13” laptop bag which shall offer the maximum possible protection. The chosen shape keeps the laptop surfaces away from dangerous hits. EVA use was extended to all the family offering additional protection to all models although is on the Güell were its use gets most benefits. There was another innovative element in the bag: the straps were removed in favor of a semi-rigid hooks which can be adjusted for a better fit. Additionally these hooks had a extra collapsible strap to close the loop started by the hook and allow a more sportive use.

La Güell nació como una bolsa de laptop de 13” que debía ofrecer la máxima protección posible. El diseño elegido no es casual ya que evita que en caso de caida el portátil impacte cualquier superficie. El material elegido (EVA) se extendió al resto de la familia ofreciendo protección adicional para todas las bolsas aunque es la Güell donde sacamos el máximo partido a su utilización. El diseño de la bolsa incorporaba otro elemento innovador: las asas. Estas habían sido sustituidas por unos ganchos que disponían de una estructura semirígida que podía moldearse para ofrecer un mejor ajuste. Adicionalmente cada asa disponía de una cinta retráctil para “cerrarla” de manera que la bolsa pudiera ofrecer una sujeción adicional para un uso más deportivo.

Finally production and marketing issues made us modify the Güell to become a 15” laptop bag (back in 2005 the 13” laptops were not as common as they currently are and although I have always been a 13” laptop enthusiast at that time that seemed the most reasonable bet) and lost its experimental hooks in favor of the crossing-back system strap which share with the other messenger bags of the collection (Diagonal y Montjuïc).

Finalmente, por motivos de marketing y producción, la Güell se convirtió en una bolsa para laptop de 15” como sus hermanas (hay que recordar que en 2005 los laptops de 13” no eran tan populares como hoy en día y aunque siempre he creído en los 13” lo cierto es que, en ese momento, parecía lo más sensato) y perdió las asas experimentales en favor del crossing-back system del resto de las bandoleras de la colección (Diagonal y Montjuïc).

With the perspective gained with the time, I still think I would love to see a 13” Güell (which would have a much more compact volume) but I will change its design to make it a regular backpack

Con la perspectiva que da el paso del tiempo sigo pensando que me encantaría ver una Güell de 13” (ya que conseguiríamos un volumen final mucho más contenido) aunque modificaría su formato para convertirla en mochila.
